Noodles

WALT: Write explanations

First open the noodle packet and put it into a bowl. Next fill up a jug with cold water and boil it. After put the hot water onto the noodles so that they are covered. Leave them there for 3-5 minutes. You will know when they are done because they will get softer. Once they are done drain the boiling water into a sink. After that, put your flavouring in and mix it.

Have you ever ate noodles??

Sand dunes

WALT: Write explanations

The wind blows the sand into a pile then water goes on it and turns it into a sand dune. Some insects live in the sand dunes so we can’t walk on them that's why they made a path for people to walk over. Sand dunes are important because if your house is behind them they can block strong wind from blowing your roof off.

Have you ever seen a sand dune?

Animals that will be extinct in 2020

WALT: Study animals that will become extinct in 2020

1. Amur Leopard

Since 1996, the amur leopard has been classified by the IUCN as Critically Endangered with less than 70 individuals thought to exist today. It is hunted and killed for its beautiful fur, its habitat is being destroyed for human settlement and agricultural practices.

2. Gorillas

Scientists have shown that gorillas live in complex social groups, display individual personalities, make and use tools, and show emotions like grief and compassion. We shouldn't be surprised though - Gorillas are one of our closest living relatives, and they share at least 95% of their DNA with humans.

3. Sea turtles

Two types of sea turtles are amongst the most endangered species in the world: the Hawksbill Turtle and the Leatherback Turtle In the past 100 years, the Hawksbill Turtle has lost 90 percent of its population, 80 percent of which has been lost in the past 10 years. As of 1996, the IUCN classified it as a critically endangered species. The Leatherback turtle is listed by the IUCN as Vulnerable, yet many subpopulations are facing extinction.

4. Orangutan

Since the millennium, the Sumatran Orangutan has been classified by the IUCN as Critically Endangered with approximately 80% of the population lost in the past 75 years mainly as a result of mass deforestation. This awful trend continues to put pressure on the remaining population of 6,600 Sumatran Orangutans that are estimated to remain on this earth.

5. Sumatran Elephant

In the past 25 years, the Sumatran Elephant has lost an astounding 70% of its habitat to deforestation for palm oil plantations, agriculture and human settlements. Less than 2000 are estimated to exist and in 2011, the Sumatran Elephant was classified by the IUCN as Critically Endangered.

6. Saola

In 1992, the discovery of this mystical creature, sometimes referred to as the Asian Unicorn, in Vietnam was hailed one of the most spectacular zoological discoveries of the 20th century. Yet already, this elusive and beautiful animal been deemed by the IUCN to be Critically Endangered and is one of the rarest large mammals to exist on Planet Earth.

7. Vaquita

With less than 100 thought to exist, the Vaquita is the rarest marine mammal in the world. Time is running out for these elusive little sea porpoises, with extinction predicted as soon as 2018.

8. Tiger

The tiger has long been hunted for its distinctive patterned fur. Of the nine tiger subspecies, three are already extinct, many are endangered but it is the South China Tiger and the Sumatran Tiger that currently face the biggest threat to their survival. Tragically, the South China Tiger is thought to be extinct in the wild as it hasn’t been spotted since the 1970s. The Sumatran Tiger is the only surviving tiger subspecies indigenous to Indonesia and as of 2008 it has been classified by the IUCN as Critically Endangered. Less than 500 of these tigers exist today in comparison with a population estimation of up to 1,000 in 1978.

9. Rhinos

Three of the five species in the family of Rhinocerotidae, are among the most endangered species in the world: the Black Rhino, the Javan Rhino and the Sumatran Rhino. The Javan Rhino is the most threatened with extinction with the total population of only 60 surviving in one National Park in Java, Indonesia. The Sumatran Rhino is Critically Endangered. It has been estimated that less than 100 exist today in the wild. The Black Rhino is classified by the IUCN as Critically Endangered with three subspecies declared extinct in 2011.

10. Pangolin

Despite their tough appearance, these small, warrior built mammals are losing the battle against poachers and habitat loss. All eight species of pangolin are under threat, ranging from Vulnerable to Critically Endangered. They are the most trafficked animal in the world, hunted for their scales which can be sold on the black market for up to $3,000/kg.

Do you know what a saola looks like?

Snow leopard

WALT: Discover animals that are endangered.
The snow leopard, also known as the ounce, is a large cat native to the mountain ranges of Central and South Asia. It is listed as Vulnerable on the IUCN Red List because the global population is estimated to number less than 10,000 mature individuals and is expected to decline about 10% by 2040.

Very rare in most of their range, an estimated 3,500 to 7,000 snow leopards are left in the wild, with 600 - 700 in zoos around the world. Exact numbers in the wild have not been determined due to the snow leopard's shy nature.

Snow leopards are often killed by local farmers because they prey on livestock such as sheep, goats, horses, and yak calves.

While leopards generally avoid humans, they tolerate proximity to humans better than lions and tigers, and often come into conflict with humans when raiding livestock.

Did you know: Snow leopards are capable of killing prey up to three times their own weight.
Have you ever seen a snow leopard?

Maui dolphins

WALT: Discover animals that are endangered.
Māui dolphin are the smallest of the world’s 32 dolphin species.
Māui and Hector's dolphins look different to other dolphins. They are the only New Zealand dolphins with a rounded black dorsal fin.

Māui and Hector’s dolphins look identical, although they are physically and genetically different.

Māui dolphin have distinctive grey, white and black markings and a short snout.
Females grow to 1.7 m long and weigh up to 50 kg.
Males are slightly smaller and lighter.

Māui dolphins are particularly vulnerable to decline as they have short lifespans, and are slow to reproduce. They only live up to 20 years.

Did you know: Maui dolphins are the rarest marine dolphin in the world.

The Museum trip

WALT:Write a recount about our trip.
On Tuesday room two and three went to the museum. We all got split into groups with a parent. When we got there we all put our bags away. Then a guy called Anthony spoke to us about safety and what we do when the alarms go off or when there's an earthquake. He also spoke to us about tourist taking pictures of us and to make a big X with our hands to tell them not to.Room 3 went to have morning tea while room 2 started on their scavenger hunt. After we ate morning tea room 3 started their scavenger hunt.In my group there was Jai,Molly,Alfred,Charlotte and me.The parent we had was James,Charlotte's dad.The first thing on our list was a geode.A stone with a hole that was filled with crystals,we had a bit of trouble finding it in the first 2 rooms but soon after we found it.When we finished the scavenger hunt we went to eat lunch outside by the fountain. Then we went to climb a few trees and have a run around. When that was over we went into the arctic voices expedition and into Anthony's classroom to learn about animal adaptations. We got a clipboard with paper on it and we had to go choose an animal from the arctic space to write 3 of its adaptations.I chose a Beluga whale. The most cutest and friendly whale ever. Then we went back to the bus and drove back to school. My favourite part was when we went down the thing where there was talking statues and the horse that we could sit on.

Have you ever been to the museum?

My Duffy book

On Friday the 5th of July, room 3 got their Duffy books. The book I got was the Titanic young survivors,Its written by Allan Zullo. Its about who survived when it sank.Apparently the Titanic sunk because gas went off at the bottom of it and caused it to sink but people say the it hit an iceberg.I like this book because it is non fiction and its interesting historyšŸ‘€.Id like to give a big thank you to scholastic for providing these Duffy books for us.

Question-what is your favourite book?
Question-have you seen the titanic movie?

Cycle safety

On Thursday the 2nd of May the year sixes started cycle safety. We started with a brief talk then they checked our helmets and bikes to make sure our bikes were safe and our helmets were not damaged. After that they put us into groups that were suitable for us to learn. We learnt how to indicate left and right and to hold up our hands to tell the person/car behind us that we are going to stop. Then we practised on the court to make sure we were able to do it on the road without getting hurt. After lunch we did the ABBC check (air, brakes, bolts, chain). Then we went on the road for the rest of the day and the whole of Friday. We loved doing cycle safety because we learnt how to be safe on the road.
